PO‘IPU — A whispering breeze and sunny skies Saturday saw almost everyone in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf field post improved scores over the previous week.
With one score from the girls and one score from the boys unavailable at press time, the Kaua‘i High School boys team picked up its second straight win with a combined 309 over Kapa‘a and Waimea high school teams.
The 309, a stroke better than last week’s 310 at the Wailua Golf Course, was paced by Cory Oride, finishing the scenic Po‘ipu Bay course with a blistering three-under par 69, an improvement of seven strokes over his last week’s four-over par 76 in Wailua.
“Cory was doing real well,” said Kaua‘i High School athletic director Ross Shimabukuro. “According to coach Ipo Yoshioka, he was six-under after nine. He had a really good front nine.”
Following Oride, Jordan Oda finished with a five-over par 77, falling a stroke from his last week’s 76. Darren Valencia shaved four strokes off his last week’s round to finish with 81 and became part of the team scoring for the first time this week.
Wiley Yoshioka, almost going off the green at No. 16 after booming his No. 2 shot from just above the fairway bunker, ended the day with 82, and Kyle Furusho followed a stroke back at 83 for the team scoring.
Kapa‘a, netting a 353 team score, seven strokes better than its last week’s outing, was led by Weston Moniz who ended the day at 76, five strokes better than his last week’s round of 81. He was followed by Sean Mamaclay’s 80, Justin Uegawa’s 92 and Aaron Belmonte’s 99, a whopping improvement over his previous week’s 116.
Aaron Medeiros and Dylan Santos-Balisacan paced the Waimea team with scores of 80 and 81, respectively, Medeiros taking 19 strokes off his last week’s round of 99 and Santos-Balisacan entering competition for the first time, Saturday.
Jake Kuzen finished with a 99 and Camden Nakashima’s 117 accounted for the Waimea 377 team score, an improvement of 15 strokes over its last week’s outing.
Two of the Kaua‘i High School girls were unavailable for this week’s round sending Kapa‘a’s Gabrielle “Malia” Saiki to reap the top individualist at 86.
She was part of the Kapa‘a girls’ team scoring that finished at 376, an improvement 31 strokes from last week.
Following Saiki, Alexandra Dorn finished at 135, a 13-stroke improvement from last week’s Wailua GC run, and Shiyu “Star” Song coming in at 155, bettering her last week’s 180 round.
Waimea was led by Melissa Kagawa, netting the second highest girls’ score at 94, an improvement of seven strokes over her last week’s round of 101 at Wailua. She was followed by Pualani Ragasa (117) and Hamiha Arquette who entered the arena this week shooting a 131.
Charleen Miguel’s score was unavailable to make the final team determination for Waimea girls who won the team competition last week over Kapa‘a with a 370 to Kapa‘a’s 407.
In that winning round, Miguel carded a 145.
According to Shimabukuro, also missing is last week’s score for Daniel Miller, an individualist playing for Island School. Miller finished Saturday’s round at 93.
