WAILUA — Kyle Furusho shot a 4-over par 76 to finish in a three-way tie for the lead at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
But Furusho, tying with fellow Kaua‘i golfers Cory Oride and Jordan Oda, was not part of the team scoring that saw the Kaua‘i boys take the opening match with 310 points to Kapa‘a’s 360. Waimea High School rounded out the field with a 392.
Kapa‘a’s Gabrielle “Malia” Saiki finished with low individualist at 79, but the Waimea girls won the team competition with a 370 to Kapa‘a girls’ 407.
Kaua‘i High School, led by Kelli Oride’s 82, three strokes off the girls’ pace, fielded just two golfers so did not qualify for team scoring.
Rae-Lyn Morikawa finished at 94 to round out the Kaua‘i girls’ scoring.
Saiki, a strong contender with Kelli Oride during last year’s KIF golf season, was followed by Alexandra Dorn, returning from last season, netting a 148 and Shiyu “Star” Song, making her first appearance on the KIF tour, netting a 180 for the Kapa‘a team scoring.
Returning golfer Melissa Kagawa paced the Menehune ladies with a 101 followed by Pualani Ragasa (124), Charleen Miguel, fresh off the soccer and swimming circuit, carding a 145 and Hanna Pleas opening with a 154.
Cory Oride and Oda were followed one shot back by Wiley Yoshioka shooting a 77 to lead the Red Raider boys. Levi Miyashiro (81) and Reyn Morioka (87) rounded out the winning team scoring.
Weston Moniz paced the Kapa‘a boys with an 81 followed a stroke back by returning golfer Sean Mamaclay (82) and Justin Uegawa finishing at 86. Kylan Hold (111) and Aaron Guerrero (116) rounded out the Warriors’ team scoring.
Jake Kuzen paced the Menehune men with an 85 followed by Aaron Medeiros (99), Kellen Nadatani (102), Shawn Tavares (106) and Ka‘imi Kaohi-Miyashiro (109).
Menehune golfer Camden Nakashima finished with a 100 but like Furusho, was not part of the team scoring.
The KIF golf competition moves to the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course Saturday with the first group scheduled to tee off starting at noon.
