Wendy Tannery had the opportunity to expose Waimea Canyon Middle School physical education students to softball since the Waimea Invitational Softball Tournament was in her back yard. Wendy said some of the students had never experienced the game before while others were thrilled because they had relatives playing for all three of Kaua‘i’s high school teams in the tournament.
Nicole Farr, Waimea’s trainer, was just as thrilled to meet all the people from Virgina who came with the teams. She even got to meet someone from Punahou who was born in the town she was born in.
But Nicole was tied up with the tournament and Keith Burgess is enjoying Legoland with his family, so Sam Henriques (check out her layered look at track, complete with gloves and hoody) had to fill in the KIF ranks.
Waimea High School coach Teddy Pereira had the right idea. He said, “These games (for Waimea) are all hard practices. Every KIF game is a big game.”
Michael Koerte (mahalo for all the help) repeated what he was told by coach Jon Kobayashi who said if you’re going to sit on the bench, you might as well sit with the best.
And the best was represented at the annual tournament. Unfortunately, it’s not Thanksgiving, but the mahimahi and laulau were great, said Ross Shimabukuro who checked out the action before having to tend to KIF golf.
