Kaua‘i High School’s Kayla Werner gave a good, heaving shot put toss and got just the distance she needed to automatically qualify for this year’s state championships — by 1/4 of an inch.
Werner won the Girls Shot Put event on Friday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium with a toss of 32-feet-5 1/4 inches. The senior was competing in her first meet of the season as a Red Raider and her shot put toss fell a good 10 feet ahead of the second-place finisher Erin Bovid of Waimea High School. Bovid finished with a toss of 22-feet-7 1/2 inches. Werner also won the Girls Discus event with a toss of 91-feet-7 inches.
Kaua‘i’s Kathleen Cadiente won two field events in addition to winning the Girls 100 Meter Dash and leading off for the 4×100 Meter Relay. Cadiente won the Girls Long Jump with a distance of 15-feet-4 inches, a quarter of an inch ahead of her teammate Liann Gregorio (15-feet-3 3/4 inches).
Cadiente then won the Girls Triple Jump with a distance of 31-feet-4 3/4 inches. Aimee Paloran finished second with a jump of 29-feet-9 1/4 inches, but won the Girls High Jump with a height of 4-feet-6 inches.
On the boys side, Kaua‘i’s Allen Domingo was a dual, field event winner, taking the Long Jump with a distance of 20-feet-5 1/2 inches and the Triple Jump with a 39-feet-2 inches.
Kaua‘i’s Jacobb Saniatan and Kapa‘a’s Tyler Cram were battling it out in the High Jump for the second week in a row. In the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation opener nearly 10 days ago, it was Cram who came out on top. On the chilly Friday afternoon, the 1-2 finish was reversed. Saniatan beat out Cram with a height of 5-feet-8 inches, while Cram scratched out at 5-feet-6.
Waimea’s Saui Matagiese won the Discus Throw with a toss of 120-feet-4 inches over Kaua‘i’s Scot Sasan (114-feet-8 1/2 inches). Sasan won the Shot Put (40 feet 1/2 inch).
The next meet will be at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Vidinha Stadium.
