KAPA‘A — Brody Soong scored his first-ever goal for the Green Machine, but the effort came up short, Sunday as the Squirt division team dropped a 5-4 match to the Devils when Edward Punua broke the 4-4 stalemate on an unassisted goal with 30 ticks remaining in the contest.
Punua finished the weekend on a high note, netting four goals in the Devils’ Sunday win and a hat trick for the Devils in their Friday night’s 6-4 loss to the Green Machine.
Kalena Harder had the hot stick for the Green Machine, netting two goals in Friday night’s win and a goal in the Sunday effort. All his goals were unassisted.
Victor Sanchez was on Harder’s tail with a hat trick in the Friday night outing and adding a goal in the Sunday match.
Derek Soong had a goal, Friday night for the Green Machine while Brody Soong scored on a Derek Soong assist, Sunday. Kainalu Gandia also netted a goal for the Green Machine, Sunday.
Thor Haughland followed Punua’s hat trick for the Devils, Friday and Joshua Lakatos netted a goal on an assist from Isaac Lakatos, Sunday.
Green Machine goalkeeper Tomas Sanchez was 18 saves on 22 shots, Friday and 10 saves on 15 shots, Sunday.
Devils’ goal chores were shared by Isaac Lakatos who finished with 18 saves on 24 shots, Friday and Luke Boyd had 24 saves on 28 shots, Sunday.
The Bantam division also saw the Devils split its weekend series after overcoming a 2-1 halftime deficit, Friday night.
The Devils answered with six goals to Team Todd’s three goals to finish 7-5 before coming up a goal short against Da Ed Team, Sunday, 5-4.
Austin Taylor, playing strong middle and defense for the Devils came up with one goal Friday night and improved to two goals, Sunday.
Cydney Sitzler finished with a goal and assisted Marcus Punua on his goal Friday night before adding a goal, Sunday on an assist by Troy Spears.
Jacob Lewis and Ben Steuri each netted two goals to lead Team Todd, Friday night with Kala Yee getting two assists and a goal in the effort.
Stephanie Steuri, the Team Todd goalie, finished with 41 saves on 48 shots.
Iki Punua, the Devils’ goalkeeper, finished Friday night’s match with 37 saves on 42 shots, and had 26 saves on 31 shots, against Da Eh Team, Sunday.
Daniel Alonzo, Da Eh Team’s goalie, finished with 47 saves on 51 shots in the game that ended in a 1-1 halftime stalemate followed a Taylor shot with 4:26 remaining.
Matthias Davis, always with his support group in the stands, finished with a second-half hat trick to lead the Sunday win with Grant Basquez adding a goal and an assist, and Trevor McCracken adding a goal and two assists.
Mark Wojcinski netted two goals for the Midget A and Brandon Muraoka lent an assist, but the Midget division of the Kaua‘i Inline Hockey Association finished in a Friday night tie, 2-2 as the Midget B’s Keala Davis netted a goal on an assist from Trevor McCracken to knot the contest, Friday night.
“It’s getting harder and harder because more of the kids are coming out to play now that other seasons are winding down,” said Midget A goalkeeper Jaime Pablo who finished Friday night with 48 saves on 50 shots. On Sunday, Pablo finished with 30 saves on 36 shots as Midget A dropped a 6-3 match to Midget B.
Greg Balmores, the Midget B goalkeeper finished Friday night with 21 saves on 23 shots, and on Sunday chalked up a dozen saves on 15 shots for the win.
The key to the Midget B win came on the numerous assists, including a pair of dual assists spearheaded by Keala Davis whose two assists came on dual efforts.
Zachary Rodriguez and Noah Chun sparked the scoring with two goals each, Chun also finishing with two assists and Rodriguez ending with an assist.
Ikaika Fuerte added a goal late in the first half and Trevor McCracken iced the win on a goal with 20 seconds showing in the game.
