PO‘IPU — A 50-year-old male visitor was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
The resident of Mission Viejo, Calif., is believed to have been snorkeling in front of the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club at around 2:03 p.m. when he became distressed, a county news release states.
Lifeguards at the Po‘ipu tower, located some 800 yards away, saw the man through binoculars, ran down the beach and headed towards him.
Within minutes they were at his side. They put the man on a board, paddled him to shore and immediately began performing CPR.
Firefighters from the Koloa station arrived shortly and took over resuscitation efforts.
They continued CPR on the man while en route to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
