PUHI — Souper Bowls are now available at the Clayworks at Kilohana, said Susan Pittman, one of the shop’s owners.
“People have been calling since last month wondering if we were going to do Souper Sunday again,” Pittman said. “I have about a week more to throw more bowls and we’ll be ready.”
Souper Bowl is a benefit for the Kaua‘i Food Bank that has taken place on the same day as the National Football League’s annual Super Bowl championship game, and this year’s event is scheduled for Feb. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clayworks location at the Kilohana Plantation estate.
Patrons can pick up tickets for the event either at Clayworks or at the Kaua‘i Food Bank. For a $25 donation, diners receive a hand-made ceramic bowl filled with a special soup created by the culinary staff at Gaylord’s.
The soup may be enjoyed on the Clayworks outdoor gathering area, or taken to be enjoyed during Super Bowl XLIII, which will feature the AFC’s Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFC’s Arizona Cardinals.
During the several years that Clayworks has hosted the event, Pittman said it has grown to where last year about 150 patrons enjoyed the soup and bowl.
“This year, we’ve increased the amount to 175 bowls,” Pittman said. “And we’re adding a couple of new patterns for people to add to their collection of Souper Bowls.”
Additionally, local celebrities such as Dr. Becky Rhodes of the Kaua‘i Humane Society and Ron and Laura Wiley of KQNG Radio fame make it a point to never miss the event.
“We even had Screwie Louie, one of three mascots on the Kilohana property, make a bowl one year,” Pittman said. “During one of the bowl creations, Louie came and put his paws into everything. But that was the first bowl that sold that year.”
Pittman is hopeful they can move all of the bowls because the Kaua‘i Food Bank needs the help due to the downturn in the economy and the rising numbers of hungry people on Kaua‘i.
