LIHU‘E — Walkers are needed for the Kaua‘i Stride and Ride charity walk hosted by the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Hawai‘i.
Kaua‘i’s Stride and Ride, to be held Feb. 21, marks the second time the event will be held on the Garden Isle, and this year, the Kaua‘i event kicks off the MDA state schedule of Stride and Ride events.
Walkers from families, businesses, college and friends can put together walk teams to help the fight against neuromuscular diseases, states a release from MDA Hawai‘i.
Teams consist of 10 people walking together.
Kaua‘i’s walk will take place at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center with registration taking place from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Walkers warm up from 8:15 a.m. for the 8:30 a.m. start. Refreshments and door prizes are available for the individual walkers as well as teams with awards being presented at 9:30 a.m.
According to Allicyn Hayes, the MDA District Field Representative, “There will be fun for the whole family. Individual walkers are welcome and we will be celebrating the achievements of the walkers with great prizes.”
Hayes said last year’s event raised $7,830, and the MDA Hawai‘i goal for this year’s event is to raise $10,000.
“So far, the community has been very generous in donating prizes to this event so I think we will have a nice selection,” Hayes said.
Funds generated by this event stay in Hawai‘i to support comprehensive health services, including hospital clinics, family support groups, a week-long summer camp program, and supplemental funding for medical equipment purchases and repairs.
It will also help fund more than 400 research projects worldwide to find treatments and a cure for neuromuscular diseases.
