Despite the fact that the majority of the first half was played on Kaua‘i’s side, it was the Red Raiders who got on the board first. On one of five times that Kaua‘i was able to get across midfield and into Kapa‘a territory, in a three-way scuffle, Keala Lovell was able to come of it with a goal.
Kaua‘i would hold onto that lead despite the fact that Kapa‘a had taken twice as many shots as the Raiders did, and go into the half up 1-0.
Ikaika Fuerte then tied the game shortly after the break. It wasn’t until the final minutes of the game that Kapa‘a (6-0-1) got what would turn into the winning goal from Kaisen Carrillo. By edging out the Raiders, Kapa‘a remains undefeated even with its season-opening 0-0 against Waimea.
Girls: Kaua‘i 1, Kapa‘a 0
Kaua‘i’s girls were able to fend off the Kapa‘a girls soccer team to win 1-0 yesterday at Vidinha Stadium.
Kaua‘i’s leading scorer Ashlyn Ubongen scored in the 18th minute and Kaua‘i, last year’s third-place finishers at the girls Division II state soccer tournament, stays undefeated.
Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a’s junior varsity teams play at 4:30 p.m. today at Vidinha Stadium and the next full day of soccer will be on Saturday when Waimea hosts Kapa‘a.
