WAINIHA — Rough weather hit the island late Saturday evening, causing two bridge closures on the North Shore.
Kalihiwai bridge remained closed for approximately two hours due to a downed tree, according to Tammy Mori, spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation.
“Police dispatch were notified at around 11:01 p.m. last night about a big tree blocking both lanes of Kuhio Highway south of Kalihiwai Bridge. One lane reopened at 11:23 p.m. and the highway completely reopened at 12:16 a.m.,” said Mary Daubert, county spokesperson, in a written statement yesterday.
Further north, at around 10:54 p.m. in Wainiha, a caller reportedly alerted police dispatch to a utility pole with attached power lines blocking both lanes of Kuhio Highway.
Both Wainiha bridges were closed until 6:17 a.m. yesterday after which one lane of traffic was allowed to pass.
Randy Hee, KIUC president and CEO, said crews responded to the call and found that a pine tree had knocked over the utility pole.
“They had everything fully restored by 10 a.m. and, at that time, both lanes were re-opened,” he said.
Partly cloudy conditions with possible rain are expected to continue through today with a return of sunny skies by Tuesday.
The National Weather Service Forecast Office has issued a high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores. Combined seas of 10 feet or higher are expected through tomorrow.
