The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i teamed up again this year in asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through the Zonta/The Garden Island Christmas Fund.
For weeks, culminating on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, The Garden Island shared stories of families who needed a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names were changed to protect privacy.
Funds raised are distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
The following are actual letters received by The Garden Island and the Zonta Club. Mahalo to all who helped make the holidays happier for the needy this year.
Brighten up someone’s Christmas
The other $120 (of this donation amount) went to a Kaua‘i policeman who waved me on, then stopped me on the South Shore of Kaua‘i.
The short, little round cop then gave me a ticket.
Now I know the meaning of “tourist trap.”

Dinner and donations
Thank you for your informative information about the Zonta Club. Enclosed are two dinner certificates to the Hanama‘ulu Restaurant.
Tom and I decided to do the Angel Tree for one boy and one girl. We also plan to donate to Toys for Tots.
Merry Christmas and thank you once more.

Crisis period
Thank you so much for your help with the “card.”
My wife and I are going through a crisis period in our marriage.
She just suffered a stroke and is in Wilcox Memorial Hospital, room 306, getting a blood transfusion.
Hopefully, doctors say a stroke cannot be predicted but only treated and get healed to their experience on strokes.
The card you’ve sent me will be of great help at this time of year.

Small token
With heartfelt thanks and gratitude, you’ve touched my father’s heart with this small token during this holiday season.
We’ve just lost my mother last month, his wife of 71 years. It will sure brighten his holiday season.
