Residents of a six-bedroom Wailua Houselots home were having a party in their garage and were unaware of smoke and flames emanating from one of the bedrooms when an attentive neighbor called 911 and alerted them to the blaze Saturday evening, according to a county press release.
The owners of the home on Lanakila Road used a garden hose in attempt to contain the fire and had nearly accomplished the feat before firefighters arrived.
Engine 2, Truck 2, Engine 3, Rescue 3 and prevention officers responded to the fire.
After a firefighter entered the home and doused a smoldering mattress, the fire was deemed under control by 7:30 p.m., within roughly 10 minutes of the 911 call, according to the release.
The fire was confined to only one 225-square-foot bedroom and damage is estimated to be about $30,000, the release said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Robert Westerman, Fire Department chief, although officials believe the fire to have been an accident.
