Mary Rauh’s sonorous, warm timbre has earned her invitations to sing at the State Theater on the New York City Opera stage and the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
She will be dedicating her performance to her first voice teacher, the late David Conrad. The Kaua‘i High School graduate and a previous Mokihana Club Music Scholarship recipient will perform Art Songs, Lieder, Opera and Broadway and will be accompanied by Virginia Shepherd.
Rauh left the Hawaiian Islands to further pursue operatic study at SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music where she went on to graduate studies and receive the only full scholarship.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children under 10, free. Tickets are available at the following outlets: Kmart in Lihu‘e, Zack’s Frozen Yogurt at the Coconut Marketplace, Kaua‘i Music and Sound in Kapa‘a, Scotty’s Music in Kalaheo and Hanalei Surf Shop in Hanalei.

Senegal, West African dance and drum classes

Aloha Africa welcomes guest artist Ousmane Sall , master dancer and teacher from Senegal, to Kaua’i for two weeks of dance instruction. According to the cultural exchange organization’s Web site: “There is powerful medicine in the unity of earth-based cultures. In both Hawai’i and Africa dancers and musicians are the keepers of tradition, history and spiritual practice.” The classes are as follows: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow and Jan. 10. A drum class with Nii Anang follows at 11:30 a.m. Evening classes are from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday and Thursday. Classes are $15 each. For more information visit aloha-africa.com

Three Kaua‘i non-profits coordinate Na Mele O Kaua‘i (songs of Kaua‘i). Kaua‘i Music Festival, Garden Island Arts Council and Malie Foundation join forces to promote 2009 as the “Year of Hawaiian Music.” To kick this theme off, between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. today five radio stations will play only music about Kaua‘i in the Hawaiian language. All listeners on Kaua‘i will be able to tune in and receive Hawaiian music at the same time. Participating radio stations include: KONG FM93.5, SURF 95.9, KUAI AM720, KESU 87.7, KKCR FM91.9.
