Young Pierce Murphy was the overall top finisher in the Xterra Trail 5K Run on Monday in Kailua, O‘ahu. The 15-year-old from Hanalei, running in the Men’s 15- to 19-year-old division, finished with a time of 19:19 — a pace of roughly 3:52.
Murphy finished nearly three minutes before the second overall finisher, Kenneth Huston of Honolulu. The 29-year-old finished with a time of 22:03.9. Scott Hom, also of Honolulu, finished with the third fastest time of 22:26.4.
This will be Murphy’s fifth meet win of the year. He previously won the Boys 3,000 Meter Run at the Mayor’s Invitational high school meet in March, the 1,500 Meter Run at the Rotary Meet in April, 5K of the 15th Annual Kona Marathon in July and the Waimea Invitational cross country meet in September.
More than 800 runners from 32 states and eight countries participated in the different events.
Murphy was the only runner listed in that race from Kaua‘i.
Murphy is a sophomore at Island School. He is the son of Shawn and Doreen Murphy.
