“Noho Hewa: The Wrongful Occupation of Hawai‘i” will show on Dec. 20 from 6 until 8:30 p.m. at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with filmmaker Anne Keala Kelly.
The documentary was named winner of the Hawai‘i International 2008 Film Festival for Best Documentary.
It is a contemporary look at Hawaiian people, politics and resistance in the face of their systematic erasure under U.S. laws, economy, militarism, and real estate speculation.
According to a news release, “the story draws links between the military occupation of Hawai‘i, the fraudulence of statehood, the Akaka Bill, homelessness, desecration and more.
Featured are interviews with Haunani-Kay Trask, Kaleikoa Ka‘eo, Noenoe Silva, Keanu Sai, J. Kehaulani Kauanui and others.”
According to Kelly, “‘Noho Hewa’ can and should be used to further our collective causes here. It’s not often that a feature-length film represents actual Hawaiian matters.”
Suggested donations of $10 or more will go toward covering the filmmaker’s expenses and the cost of the screening.
KCC Hawaiian Club will be selling refreshments prior to the showing.
Kelly can be heard live on “Na Leo Hawaiian Issues” on Kaua‘i Community Radio from 1 to 2 p.m. on Dec. 20.
