Surfers took advantage of a building northwest swell that peaked yesterday with 20- to 30-foot waves in Hanalei and Ha‘ena.
A high surf warning remains in effect for north- and west-facing shores until 6 a.m. today.
The warning means dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline, according to the National Weather Service. This results in very dangerous swimming conditions, deadly rip currents and significant beach erosion.
No injuries were reported related to the high surf.
A small craft advisory is also in effect until 6 a.m. today. Inexperienced mariners are advised to avoid navigating in these conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
