After rocking a benefit concert over the weekend, world-renowned violinist Karen Briggs lost her instrument Monday when someone broke into her rental car parked at Maha‘ulepu Beach.
The perpetrator threw a large lava rock through the back window and removed her Meissner and Son violin, its case and three French bows, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said yesterday. The items are valued at $14,450.
The crime occurred between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., she added.
Briggs, who spent a decade on tour with Yanni, performed for a reduced fee on Friday and Saturday at Kaua‘i Community College. She was a feature violinist with Lao Tizer for the event to help raise funds for the Imaginarium, the new Kaua‘i Children’s Discovery Museum.
The Kaua‘i Police Department asks anyone with information on the incident to call dispatch at 241-1711 or Crime Stoppers at 241-1887.
Tips to reduce vehicle break-ins
•Leave your valuables at home or secured at the hotel room when going on an outing.
•Take only what you need for the day or the event that you have planned.
•If you have to take your valuables with you, secure them in the trunk of the car before arriving at your destination and try to be sure that no one sees you placing them in the trunk.
•Never leave valuables exposed in the cab of the vehicle in plain view of the public.
•Park your vehicle in heavily used or high-traffic area. Don’t park your vehicle in secluded locations.
•Be aware of your surroundings. Look for suspicious individuals or activities in the immediate area.
