Yasmine Ware became the second swimmer in Kaua‘i history to earn an outright Zone time, Saturday, said Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando Anaya.
“Last year, she won the states in the Girls 11-12 50 Yard Backstroke. This meet, she went one better and finished with her first Zone time,” Anaya said in a phone announcement from O‘ahu.
Ware, entering the event on a 30.97 time she earned at the Mokihana Aquatics Fun Meet, Nov. 2 in Waimea, improved on that swim with a 30.46 swim at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center located at the Central O‘ahu Regional Park, Anaya said.
That swim earned the 11-year-old a second overall finish out of 44 swimmers entered in the event, and was enough to push her into a Zone qualifier position.
The Zone qualifying time in that event is 30.59.
“Yasmine was the only 11-year-old in the Top 10 of that event,” Anaya said. “The first place was taken by a 12-year-old.”
Anaya said the only other Kaua‘i swimmer to earn outright Zone times was Keenan Anaya, now enjoying his third year as a swimmer at the University of Hawai‘i.
When Keenan was swimming in the 11-12 Boys division, he earned Zone times in five events and was the first to earn outright Zone times.
With the qualification, Orlando said Ware will be returning to O‘ahu to compete in the Zone tournament in August. Hawai‘i is hosting that competition and Ware will be re-entering the same pool she earned her Zone time, then.
Ware competed in 12 events at the three-day swim meet on O‘ahu. Along with her, Kaitlin Santos, 13, was entered into 14 events and Kaitlyn Jarry, 15, was also entered into 14 events.
A full breakdown of the Mokihana swimmers’ performance will appear in a future issue of TGI.
