Skye Shimabukuro had seven goals and Kaua‘i High School girls varsity soccer coach Matt Victor was happy.
Shimabukuro paced the Red Raider team who finished the pre-season Big Island Candies/Hilo High Soccer Hilo Bay Classic with three victories.
In Friday’s opener against Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, Kaua‘i finished 5-0 before moving on to face Kealakehe. The Red Raiders ended that contest 8-0 and finished the tournament with a 7-0 win against Kamehameha-Hawai‘i.
“The girls did really good out on the field,” Victor said. “We ended up scoring 20 points and had none scored against us.”
But Victor is cautious about entering the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer season which opens in December, anticipating a good season if the girls stay on track.
“I’m glad we faced the teams we did on the Big Island,” Victor said. “All three of our opponents were from last year’s state championships, and our final opponent, Kamehameha-Big Island, is the defending Division II state champion.”
Victor said the weather was nice, adding that when the girls called home, it was raining and cold on Kaua‘i, but clear on the Big Island.
Shimabukuro was the scoring leader in all three games, finishing with a pair of goals against HPA, taking a hat trick out of the Kealakehe matchup and adding another pair of goals against Kamehameha-Hawai‘i.
Joining Shimabukuro, Ashlyn Ubongen finished with two goals against HPA, added one against Kealakehe and ended with two goals against Kamehameha-Hawai‘i.
Jessica Iwata, who last week signed her letter of intent to play softball at the University of Hawai‘i, finished with one goal against HPA and ended her Big Island tour with another goal against Kealakehe.
Malia Kagawa, scoring one goal in the HPA win, added another pair of goals in the Kealakehe victory.
Additionally, midfielder Brandi Gomes notched a goal in the Kealakehe matchup, Destiny Banasihan, Kristina Baptiste and Teal Basquez added a goal apiece in Kaua‘i’s win against Kamehameha-Hawai‘i.
Victor said the Big Island tournament ended the Kaua‘i pre-season games.
