Tomorrow the Ohana Maitreya Fund of the International Campaign for Tibet will host their first informational gathering on the newly formed organization. Funds are sought to assist Tibetan communities in the building of “shedras,” which are institutes of higher learning for Tibetan women now living in India. Through these women’s’ colleges, Tibetans preserve their culture and traditional wisdom, and the women are kept safe, fed and educated.
Special guest Lama Wangchuk, H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche’s brother, will be offering prayer and song. Lama Wangchuk is a younger brother of His Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche, and was a monk for fifteen years at Sherabling Monastery in Northern India. He completed the three year, three month, three day retreat with seventeen others in 1991, which gave him the title Lama. Lama Wangchuk has been living in Honolulu since 1995, and is the spiritual director of Kamtsang Sherab Choling.
There will be a community potluck is at 5:30 p.m. followed by the program beginning at 6:30 p.m.
To RSVP call, 651-0286.
The fund is dedicated to the memory of Kaua‘i resident Barbara Jarvis. Barbara’s mother, Lucy Jarvis is a member of the fund’s advisory council and has come to Kaua‘i to lend her support. Lucy Jarvis is a well-known and successful television producer. She was recently designated a “Giant in Broadcasting,” by the Library of American Broadcasting. As founder of the International Women’s Forum, she is an inspiration to many women world-wide.
The Indian government has made it possible for Tibetans to find refuge in India. However, the refugees arrive with no funds and little resources. The Tibetan community has been slowly building new centers of learning in India, focusing primarily on facilities for monks. The OM Fund was established to help with the construction of educational facilities for women. The first priority of the fund is the completion of the College at Tilokpur before the next monsoon.
Currently there are over 75 nuns crowded into an older building that was designed for 30. This event is a gathering of people who want to help in the preservation of Tibetan cultural traditions and wisdom through the education and training of girls and women. It is an opportunity for the Kaua‘i community to attend an evening of festivities and to learn about the OMFunds’s work in India. Currently, there are 250 members of International Campaign For Tibet on Kaua‘i.
The event will take place beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Harmony Farms in Kapa‘a. There is no cost to attend. Call or e-mail for directions, rmazor@omfund.org or 651-0286.
