The state Clean Water Branch yesterday issued a brown water advisory for east and north Kaua‘i after heavy rains caused silt-laden turbid runoff.
Swimmers and surfers from Nawiliwili to Hanalei Bay are advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, chemicals and associated flood debris, according to a notice from Monitoring and Analysis Section Chief Watson Okubo.
When coastal waters are dirty, it is difficult to determine what is in it at a glance, Clean Water Branch Chief Alec Wong said. He cautioned the public to stay out until further notice.
Such conditions also present an increased risk of shark attacks, officials have said.
The warning, which Wong said was determined by a staff analysis of the conditions, seemed to have little effect yesterday. Kite surfers were seen sailing through choppy brown water at Wailua and other ocean-goers were spotted taking advantage of the periodic sunshine after squalls laced into the island for hours on end Sunday and Monday.
