The Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association will meet with the coaches and athletic directors of the schools that will be competing in this week’s First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football championships, starting at 10 a.m., today, at Aloha Stadium.
With Punahou defeating St. Louis Friday night at Aloha Stadium, the final brackets for the Division I tournament has been completed with Punahou winning the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and taking the No. 1 spot. The Buffanblu yesterday captured their first ILH Division I title since 2005.
The brackets had primarily been set last week and were just awaiting the last ILH game.
The Division I tournament representation is as followed: the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association received three spots (Farrington, Kahuku and the defending champions of Leilehua), the ILH, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation and the Maui Interscholastic League each received one slot (Punahou, Kealakehe and Baldwin.)
For Division II, the ILH was given one spot (defending DII champion ‘Iolani), the OIA was given two spots (Campbell and Radford) and the Neighbor Islands were given one apiece (Lahainaluna, Kaua‘i and Konawaena).
Of all the schools competing, six-time league champion Kaua‘i High School is the only undefeated team heading into the tournament.
The Division I tournament with No. 4 Kealakehe taking on Farrington at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, at the Ticky Vasconelles Stadium at Roosevelt High School and No. 3 Baldwin hosting Leilehua at the War Memorial Stadium on Maui. Top-seeded Punahou and No. 2 Kahuku received the first-round bye.
The Division II tournament will start with the Kaua‘i Red Raiders hosting the Rams of Radford at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Vidinha Stadium. No. 4 Campbell will visit Konawaena also at 7:30 p.m. No. 1 ‘Iolani and No. 2 Lahainaluna received first-round byes.
Since the division split in 2003, the OIA has won four Division I titles and two Division II titles.
The ILH has won one Division I title (Kamehemeha Schools Kapalama 2004).
The 2005 Division II state title game was the first in history that featured Neighbor Island Schools — King Kekaulike defeated Kaua‘i High School. King Kekaulike has since moved to Division I.
