Kaua‘i 6, Hilo 1
Ashlyn Ubongen finished with a hat trick last night as Kaua‘i’s girls soccer team defeated Hilo 6-1 at Vidinha Stadium, kicking off the high school preseason.
Getting past two defenders, Ubongen put the Red Raiders on the board early in the first half when she got a quick flick from Skye Shimabukuro.
Shimabukuro, a senior who has verbally committed to playing for the University of Hawai‘i next year, finished the night with four assists and a goal. Brandi Gomes and Christina Albano also scored for the Raiders.
Kaua‘i, which was playing at its home stadium for the first time since taking third place at last year’s Division II Hawai‘i High School State Championships, defeated the Division I Hilo team in dramatic fashion. The Raiders maintained possession for the majority of the game and more shots on goal.
Hilo’s Billie Hiraishi got the Vikings’ lone goal midway through the second half when she was sent to the line because of a Kaua‘i handball. Hiraishi lined up and smacked one past the outstretched hands of a senior rookie in Jessica Iwata — a league and state all-star softball player.
Hilo will wrap up its preseason stay here after playing both Kapa‘a and Waimea high schools today.
