Mark Rogers scored off assists from Chance Bukoski and Terry James as the
Hawai‘i Pacific University Sea Warriors defeated Grand Canyon 1-0 yesterday for the first time in school history in their quest for the PacWest Conference title.
Kapa‘a High School graduate Bukoski fired a shot at the 52nd minute, but missed just left of the goal. A free kick just outside the penalty area was lofted into the box by Jim Terry. Bukoski ran on to it and flicked it to the far post for Rogers, who volleyed home the goal just under the cross bar.
HPU finishes the season 11-5-2.
HPU had the better of the Antelopes on the afternoon. Their pressure on the GCU goal led to 13 shots and 10 corner kicks.
Franco Carotenuto posted four saves for GCU with Matt Terry turning away three GCU chances.
HPU entered the match trailing first place Notre Dame de Namur by one point in the standings.
A tie by the Argos would have given HPU a share of the PacWest title, but the 3-0 win in La‘ie gave the title to 0. Still, HPU did its part by topping the defending conference champions yesterday.
