BOISE, Idaho — The No. 7 University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (20-3, 13-1 WAC) swept through the Boise State Broncos (7-17, 3-10) 25-15, 25-13 and 25-17 at Bronco Gym yesterday to start the road trip.
Jamie Houston stayed on her torrid pace with 11 kills, seven digs and a .556 hitting percentage, posting her fourth-straight match hitting at least .500 with double-digit kills. Kanani Danielson added nine kills and a match-high 18 digs while Aneli Cubi-Otineru hit .467 with nine kills and four digs. Nickie Thomas had five kills and three blocks with Amber Kaufman adding four kills and three aces. Stephanie Ferrell came off the bench to hit .300 with six kills. Dani Mafua set Hawai‘i to a .352 hitting percentage, posting 38 assists and two blocks while Tara Hittle posted 11 digs in just two sets.
The Rainbow Wahine started the match well, jumping out to an 8-3 edge. Hawai‘i continued to dominate early on, taking their lead to 15-7 at the media timeout. Hawai‘i got it up to 22-10 before a four-point run by the Broncos got it to 22-14. But that was as close as Boise State would get as Hawai‘i closed out the first set 25-15.
The second set started out closer as the two teams traded points before a 4-0 BSU run gave them a quick 8-5 edge. But Hawai‘i then caught fire, scoring the next 11 points on the serve of Danielson, taking a 16-8 advantage. The Rainbow Wahine kept pushing, scoring four of the last five points to take it 25-13.
Boise State took an early 7-6 lead to open the third set, only to see a 5-1 run by the Rainbow Wahine flip the score to 12-8.
The Broncos responded, scoring five of the next six, tying the score at 13-13. Kaufman then took over from the service line, posting two aces while serving a 9-0 Hawai‘i run, getting it to 22-13. Hawai‘i allowed four more points before a kill by Danielson closed it out 25-17.
Hawai‘i will now head to Northern Idaho to face the Idaho Vandals at 5 p.m. HST, tomorrow, in Idaho.
The Wahine then finish the road trip with a match at Fresno State at 5 p.m. HST on Monday.
