KKCR Nov. 6 membership drive
The Kekahu Foundation and KKCR Kaua‘i Community Radio will start a fall membership drive as volunteers and staff members head to the airwaves, phones and Web site beginning Nov. 6 through Nov. 17. KKCR is Kaua‘i’s only non-profit, non-commercial, listener-supported community radio station. KKCR’s membership drive is mobilized by approximately 100 volunteers throughout Kaua‘i, and is supported by local businesses called “KKCR WaveRiders” who in addition to financial support also offer donated gifts. There will also be an “Early Bird” pledge opportunity for those who commit to KKCR before Nov. 6 to be entered into a drawing to win an additional prize. KKCR currently has nearly 1,000 members, and is seeking to top 1,200 members with this latest effort. “This outreach is important to our ongoing operations, and adding 200 new members is the goal we’re working to achieve,” said Jerry Brocklehurst, KKCR general manager. “And for this drive we are particularly pleased to be working not only for KKCR, but also helping the Kaua‘i Food Bank.” Brocklehurst and outgoing station manager Gwen Palagi will be co-managing the drive this year, working alongside station volunteers and Kekahu Foundation board members. KKCR can be heard throughout the entire island from Polihale on the Westside to Ha‘ena on the North Shore, as well as on the island of Ni‘ihau. This capability is one of the few ways to keep the whole island community informed during times of emergency or disaster. As an important member of the community, KKCR serves other non-profits through public service announcements, public affairs programming, partnerships, and its community and Hawaiian music calendars. KKCR serves Kaua‘i at 91.9, 90.9 on the North Shore, and 92.7 in the Anahola-Moloa‘a area. It can be found on cable at 95.1 and on the Web at www.kkcr.org. For information about volunteering to help in the membership drive or at KKCR, call 826-7774.
Golf for a good cause
The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa will host a bevy of activities for the enjoyment of residents and guests alike on Nov. 23. The annual Holiday Craft Fair provides an opportunity to buy handcrafted products. On the same day the Grand Hyatt will also host a silent auction and “Kauai’s Grand Slam” Golf Tournament benefiting Make-A-Wish Hawaii at the Poipu Bay Golf Course. These events will raise funds for Make-A-Wish Hawaii, enabling them to grant the wishes of Hawai‘i’s children who face life threatening medical conditions. Those in need of holiday gifts can shop with the local vendors. Featuring artisans from carvers, painters, and lei makers to jewelry makers and quilters, this provides an opportunity to find a unique gift while supporting the island’s craftspeople and the local economy. In addition to the local arts and crafts booths, there will be cultural demonstrations and live entertainment throughout the day.
The craft fair will be held in the lobby atrium at the resort from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
With an immense variety of goods and services to bid on, the silent auction to benefit Make-A-Wish Hawaii will take place both at the resort and the Poipu Bay Golf Clubhouse from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Golfers can get in a game for a good cause on this day too. The golf tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. at the Poipu Bay Golf Course. For more information, call 240-6375.
