Kaua‘i 24, Waimea 13 – Kaua‘i High School scored two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter and defeated Waimea High School 24-13 last night at Vidinha Stadium for homecoming.
Kaua‘i and Waimea exchanged the lead twice on the night. Waimea got on the boards first with a 71-yarder from Cole Parongao to Moses Fierro.
Fierro, the second leading receiver in the league, had another 100-plus game finishing with seven catches for 119 yards and a TD.
Kaua‘i was held scoreless in the first quarter, but claimed the lead with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Trey Shimabukuro to Canaan Bernard.
Trent Allianic nailed a 38-yard field goal to pad the lead a little before the end of the half.
With the clock winding down on the third quarter, Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo took a handoff from Cole Parongao for a two-yard touchdown. Both of the Menehune’s TDs were scored within the last 10 seconds of the quarters.
Waimea held Kaua‘i to fewer points than the undefeated Red Raiders were used to. Heading into last night’s game, Kaua‘i was averaging 38.5 points per game and allowing only 7.5. The Menehune, though, was able to keep the pressure on the Raiders without the help of many of their big playmakers who were out with injuries.
Waimea played without its starting quarterback Jenzen Cacal, receivers Max Agor and Paul Correa, running back Ikaika Rapacon, kicker Cody Owen and Kalani Fernandez. Waimea also committed all seven of the games penalties.
Kaua‘i’s leading rusher Paleku Yasay finished the night with 19 carries for 100 yards and a TD and the league’s leading receiver Sheldon Sakai went 9 catches for 101 yards and the games final touchdown — a 14-yard pass from Shimabukuro. It was Sakai’s sixth touchdown of the season and Shimabukuro’s 17th.
