Last week, The Garden Island introduced a dual winner who took both the weekly win and the chance to be on the panel.
This week, it happened again.
“They’re going to think it’s a set-up,” said winner Nancy Burton of Lihu‘e who successfully beat the panel with 10 out of 13 games predicted correctly and, a day later, was randomly selected to be on the panel.
A football fan of 25 years, Burton said she keeps up with all the games, “every Saturday and Sunday.”
Burton started playing the Football Frenzy last year, entering at least one ballot a week. But this year, she stepped up her game.
“Now I do two or three. This week though, I have seven,” she said.
She carefully does her research, referring to a football notebook she reads and keeps tabs on teams’ wins and losses records.
Last week, I miscalculated my win-loss ratio and originally wrote that I had finished 45-35. But I was really 45-33. Either way, I’m still in the lead when it comes to us on the panel. I finished on top for the weekend at 9-4, thanks in part to my pick of Michigan State over Michigan. I was the only one on the panel to get that one.
However, all our picks took a loss on the Waimea/Kapa‘a tie. Since no one pushed on that one, none of us got that right.
So now I improve to 54-37, extending my lead over radio personality Ron Wiley who finished 7-6, 51-40. I should get a bonus point for predicting that win.
TGI’s Richard Stein was able to pull a tie off of his own, tying Wiley at 7-6. He now at least has more wins than losses at 46-45.
