NORTH SHORE, O‘ahu – University of Hawai‘i Freshman T.J. Kua fired a bogey-free 67 on Turtle Bay’s Palmer Course to take a 5 shot lead going into tomorrows final round. Kua, from Lihu‘e and a member of the UH men’s golf team, hit all 18 greens in regulation carding two birdies on the front nine and three on the back.
“Conditions were great and probably the best ball striking day I have had all year” said Kua who won the Mid Open Champ Flight earlier this year.
With 32 putts, Kua seemed to be challenged by the Palmer greens.
“Six birdie tries inside of 10 feet and I only made one,” he said.
Kua could be tough to catch as today’s round for the championship flight will be on the George Fazio Course, which is prone for low scores.
Tournament scoring record for the Turtle Bay Amateur is held by Tadd Fujikawa who won the event in 2006, posting a 36-hole total 10-under par with rounds of 69 on the Palmer and 65 on the Fazio Course.
Leading the A flight is Robert Sellers and William Enomoto who both opened with a 76 on the Fazio Course.
B flight Leader is Sucuma Elliot who shot a 76 on the Turtle Bay Resort’s Fazio Course
Byron leads the C Flight with an 87 on the Arnold Palmer Course.
