Wilcox Memorial Hospital offers “healing touch” to patients and their families. Those interested in volunteering can receive certification for $25 on Dec. 6 and 7 at the hospital.
Healing touch provides care and comfort to an individuals using gentle, non-invasive touch and energy-based techniques to balance and align the individual’s energy field while providing comfort, reducing pain and enhancing the healing process.
Savitri Kumaran, a certified healing touch practitioner, instructor and staff nurse at Wilcox has coordinated the healing touch volunteers since 1996.
“Patients or families can request healing touch at Wilcox Memorial Hospital,” Kumaran said in a recent press release. “[Those interested] can fill out the brochure that is available or by asking their nurse or doctor.”
The program currently needs 10 to 15 more volunteers.
A class in healing touch will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 6 and at Wilcox.
The class is being offered at a reduced tuition of $25. The usual cost is $225. The volunteer must commit to 75 hours of volunteer time in the next six months. For those who’ve taken healing touch level one, a refresher is encouraged.
“Our dream has been that every patient receive healing touch before and after surgery,” Savitri said.
