A snorkeling visitor found struggling in the ocean by a surfer died yesterday at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
The 73-year-old York, Penn., man was pronounced dead at 10:37 a.m. after efforts to revive him failed.
According to witnesses, the man had been snorkeling in front of the Lawa‘i Beach Resort at around 9:30 in the morning when he was discovered in distress, said Kauai County spokesperson Mary Daubert.
The surfer brought the man to shore after noticing his struggle. Moments later, the man collapsed. A bystander performed CPR on the man until firefighters from the Koloa station arrived and took over. Medics continued CPR on the man en route to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Daubert said the man was on a side trip from a Royal Caribbean cruiseship docked at Nawiliwili. He was travelling with his wife and his identity will be released after proper notification of family members.
An autopsy will determine the official cause of death.
