Kaua‘i County Council candidate Nancy McMahon said in a statement last week that her ability to learn from the past will serve her well to lead into the future.
She highlighted her experience working for government in historic preservation, land use and environmental planning, which have given her a “great understanding” of the issues that Kaua‘i faces.
“I believe that Kaua‘i is entering a critical time and I believe I can make a difference,” McMahon said.
The county’s most pressing issues include transportation, unemployment, inflation, crime and housing, she said.
“We need to find workable and sustainable solutions,” McMahon said. “Kaua‘i faces the harsh reality of shrinking revenue to support critical services. While streamlining our budget is critical, finding new revenue sources is equally important.”
Kaua‘i needs to attract, build and retain economic development that respects residents’ values, she said.
“We will need to apply green technologies so we may simultaneously save money and help preserve our environment,” McMahon said. “These goals require consensus-building to give our community control of its destiny. I believe that I am a good facilitator at building team partnerships and forging new alliances.”
Kaua‘i’s quality of life makes this county a great home for families, the candidate said.
The county should work for the protection of its natural and cultural resources, the neediest residents, education and employment opportunities, and a place for children to play, grow up and look forward to finding their career on island, she said.
“Kaua‘i has the greatest natural/cultural resources and by proper management we can increase/maximize business opportunity throughout Kaua‘i while improving community involvement and protecting the environment,” McMahon said.
