The Maui Arts and Cultural Center will begin the jurying process in September for Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2009. This statewide juried triennial art exhibition, scheduled for public view in 2009 will feature artists whose work best captures the extraordinary portrait subjects in Hawai‘i; it is the third such ‘challenge’ put forward by Maui Arts and Cultural Center for its signature exhibition. Selected portraits will be on exhibit at MACC’s Schaefer International Gallery Jan. 6 to Feb. 22, 2009.
The exhibit features two awards: The $15,000 Jurors’ Choice Award and the $5,000 Marian Freeman People’s Choice Award. A select portion of the exhibition will also travel to the Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center in Honolulu.
Preliminary jurying will take place on Kaua‘i at Kaua’i Community College. Receiving will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 and 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 21. Pick up is Sept. 20, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 22.
Artists interested in participating are invited to view and print the “Call to Artists” prospectus and submission form. The prospectus is available on the MACC Web site, mauiarts.org/schaefer/SPCprospectus2009.pdf
Or request a printed copy by telephone at 242-2787 ext. 232 or e-mail info@mauiarts.org
Semifinalists will be selected at each island location based on direct observation of the work by the jury. Final jurying will take place on Maui and results will be made available by phone.
