Headwear was not one of the popular items as Wailani Starlee Olanolan fidgeted and fumbled with her crown Saturday afternoon.
At one point, the Meadow Gold Healthy Baby 2008 crown even tumbled off her head, much to her delight as she acknowledged the audience after being named to the top spot of the pageant at the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair.
Olanolan’s queenly qualities were not restricted to the stage as the contestant moved through the audience with her fluffy white dress.
She could be seen playing with other contestants as the judges whittled down the field of 48 contestants to come up with the final winner.
Ron Wiley, an emcee for the pageant which packed the Hawaiian Airlines entertainment tent, watched as a contestant ripped a chicken outfit off his head.
Alex Ancheta, manager for Meadow Gold Kaua‘i, said it is Meadow Gold’s commitment to youth everywhere that makes it possible to hold this traditional pageant.
In addition to Olanolan, Kayton Vaughn Kalawelo O Kalani Salazar and Montana Kapahu were awarded personality awards for boy and girl, respectively.
Kaikea Tayamen and Sariya Kiana Delos Reyes earned costume awards for their stage apparel.
Racen James Kekona Pegeder and Zillary Marie Watts were presented awards for overall appearance, Watts being the final contestant to promenade before the judges.
