Teams Honolulu and Kaua‘i are tied at 8 a piece and Junior Girls division golfer Kelli Oride shot a red tee course record with a 7-under 66 in Round 1 of the second annual Mayor’s Challenge Cup yesterday at the Wailua Golf Course.
Older brother Cory Oride shot a even par yesterday for the first day of individual stroke play.
The event will conclude today, continuing with match play. The golf event puts counties Kaua‘i and Honolulu against each other over 36 holes. The Mayors’ Challenge Cup Tournament was established last August by the late Mayor Bryan Baptiste and Mayor Mufi Hanneman and is sponsored by the Hawai‘i Golf Foundation, an all-volunteer organization.
Returning on the Kaua‘i roster were Kerry Oda, Cindy Oda, Pat Viernes and Hawai‘i Hall of Fame inductee Art Fujita.
The team from Honolulu took the inaugural competition last year.
