Kealakekua — A Cody Owen field goal with 5:38 remaining split the uprights, but Waimea High School came up short against Konawaena, 17-9 in a preseason matchup on the Big Island Saturday night.
Konawaena, rebounding from a 13-0 loss at the hands of the Menehune last year, got on the boards first on a 5-yard run from Nalu Kaeo with 5:28 showing in the first half. Kawika Karratti upped the margin on a point-after boot.
But Waimea answered as Alex Palacio pulled in an 8-yard pass from Max Agor at the 2:29 mark. A blocked point-after kick saw the Menehune with a 7-6 deficit.
The Tigers weren’t done yet as Karratti booted a 26-yard field goal with just three ticks in the half for the 10-6 go-ahead.
Waimea could not answer until Owen’s field goal in the final period.
Sam Unger added to the Kona scoring on an 8-yard TD run with 11:53 remaining in the game, Karratti doing the point-after honors.
Waimea will open the gates to Hanapepe Stadium this Friday when it hosts Maui in a varsity matchup starting at 7 p.m
Anahola Joel Pahukula will provide live radio broadcast on KQNG Am 570.
