Norman Akana
Norman Kuakini Waipa Akana Sr. of Lihu‘e died July 24, 2008, at the age of 59. Born Nov. 19, 1948, in Waimea, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
He is survived by wife Priscilla H. Akana; daughter Desiree (James W.J.) Duclayan-Parsonson of Kalihiwai; sons Norman Kuakini Waipa Akana Jr. (Anita) of Arizona and Paulmert H. Dasalia; grandchildren Paulmert H.I.Dasalia, Duke Dasalia, Kassundra Dasalia, Xanniele Dasalia, Christan Shumacher, Kai Simpson, Isabella Kraklau, Kawehi Akana, Keani Kawamura, Megan Jackson and Makana Kealoha Akana; mother Margaret Goodwin Akana; siblings William Akana of Anahola, Ellen (Antonio) Blas of Wailua, Carol (Walter) Akana of Anahola, Stewart Kopa Akana of Wailua, Calvin Fu of Hanapepe, Jerry Pongasi of California, Johnny (Karen) Pongasi of Lihu‘e, Bernadette (Samuel) Banasihan of Hanapepe, Roy (Adele) Duclayan of Hanama‘ulu, Avelina (Deanna) Salvacion of Hanapepe, Norman (Jayme) Salvacion of Hanapepe; mother Evangeline Duclayan of Honolulu; brother and sisters Larry (Clarissa) Duclayan, Laura Mae Duclayan, Lisa-Ann (Mariano) Duclayan, Lei-Ann (Fred) Duclayan, Larissa (Robert) Ganiron and Laurena (Jeffrey) Bungsay, all from Honolulu; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will begin with visitation at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Burial to follow. A bike run is scheduled to leave from the Lihue Chevron next to Pizza Hut at 11 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested. Borthwick Kauai Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Solomon Fu
Solomon K. Fu Sr. of Kekaha died April 16, 2008, in Waimea at the age of 71. Born Aug. 10, 1936, in Hanalei, he was a self-employed wood carver.
He was preceded in death by wife Vernica Kalani Fu, daughter Stella Ortiz, son Hilarrion Kalani, mother Mary Makue Fu and sister Agnes Fuchigama.
He is survived by sons David H. (Malia) Fu, Solomon K. Fu, Samuel K. (Tanya) Fu, James H. Kalani, Leonard Kalani, Mathew Z. Kalani, Anthony Kalani, Solomon Fu Kalani, Ben Kalani Pa‘aluhi, Adrian Kalani, Hermin Kalani, Sammie Kalani, Eddie H. Kalani, Mano Kalani, Solomen Kalani, Samuel H. Kalani, Raymond (Perlita) Kalani, Victor K. Kalani, David D. Kalani and Pumai Kuhio Kaliloa; daughters Healani (Mark) Fu of Honolulu, Haunani Fu, Leiolani (Jake) Velasco, Ida (Stanley) Miguel, Angela Kalani, Jasmine Kalani, Jaime (Elmo) Tafoya, Rebbeca Kalani, Heraldine Kalani, Loke Kalani, Bernice Kalani and Sweetheart Kalani; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; father Charles K.C. A celebration of life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Salt Pond Beach Park. Inurnment to follow at Kealia cemetery.
Margaret Silva
Margaret Chandler Silva died July 28, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 82. Born June 2, 1926, in Wainiha, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by son Silas Silva and daughter Claudette Silva.
She is survived by husband Albert Silva; sons Elias “Kaipo” (Donna) Silva and Isaac “Koa” (Deana) Silva; grandchildren Ryan, Isaac III, Keanna, Levi, Malachi, Joshua and Kailah Silva; great-grandchild Kaimi Silva; brothers John, Thomas, Anthony and Michael Chandler; and sister Susie Chandler Espinueva.
Family and friends may visit with the family from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa, and then from 9 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Church where Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Donna Beth Bautista Guerrero died July 27, 2008, at University Medical Center in Las Vegas at the age of 30. Born May 7, 1978, in Hawai‘i, she was a child care counselor.
She is survived by parents Donaery (Nilda) Guerrero Sr. and Jovi (Rafael Pasalosdos) Guerrero, sisters Joan (Jason) Badua and Joy (Alika) Simpson, brother Donaery Guerrero Jr., grandparent Addong Bautista and fiance Alika Parks,

Leo Tawata
Leo Shinzen Tawata of Kalaheo died July 29, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 84. Born July 23, 1924, in Kalaheo, he was a communication specialist with Hawaiian Airlines.
He is survived by brothers George Shinchiku (Victoria) Tawata of Redondo Beach, Calif., Melvin Kazu (Gladiola) Tawata of Honolulu and Herbert Yoshito Tawata of Honolulu; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family kindly requests no koden. Private services were held.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary Ltd.
Sadano Gallipeau
Sadano “Hazel” Gallipeau of Kapa‘a died July 14, 2008, at home at the age of 82. Born Dec. 10, 1925, in Honolulu, she was retired from the federal government as an accountant.
She is survived by daughter Shaunne (Jerry) Souza of Kapa‘a, sisters Violet (Mappy) Shiroma and Tetsu Kobashigawa of O‘ahu, brothers Masashi (Nobuko) Kobashigawa of O‘ahu and Noboru (Jenny) Kobashigawa of Los Angeles, Calif.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Souza’s residence.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Kathleen Hanson
Kathleen “Kit” Mahealani Hanson of Honolulu died July 27, 2008, at Kuakini Medical Center at the age of 55. Born Jan. 28, 1953, in Kapa‘a, she was a travel agent for Outrigger International Travel.
She is survived by husband Michael, brothers Alio Santos II and Paul Chong, and sisters Lydia Chong and April Wong-Warling.
Memorial graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Old Koloa Church in Koloa. Aloha attire is suggested.

David Conrad
David Earl Conrad of Lihu‘e, formerly of Butler, Ky., died Aug. 2, 2008, at St. Elizabeth South at the age of 53. He was a high school teacher for 30 years at Kaua‘i High School.
He is survived by father Louis Conrad, mother Geneva Conrad and brothers Paul Conrad and Monte Conrad.
Services will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Cooper Funeral Home in Alexandria, Ky. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery.

Nelson Lalin
Nelson P. Lalin (aka Porpoise) died Aug. 3, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 50. Born Nov. 2, 1957, he was employed with the Department of Health, Vector Control Department for 22 years.
He was preceded in death by mother Olivia Daligdig Lalin.
He is survived by father Mauricio (Gliceria) Lalin; brothers Elmer (Lita) Lalin of the Philippines and Calvin (Rose) Lalin; sisters Robin Bandmann of Arizona, Melody Ann Lalin and Christine Lalin; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunties and uncles.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary in Koloa; prayer service is scheduled for 7 p.m. The family requests casual/aloha attire. Cremation to follow. On Saturday, Aug. 9, Nelson wishes a private moment of scattering of his ashes by his close friends out in the ocean at Kealia Beach.
Richard Yano
Richard T. Yano died Aug. 1, 2008, on O‘ahu at the age of 74. Born March 15, 1934, in Volcano, Hawai‘i, he was a retired Kaua‘i High School science teacher and also retired from his second career as an Agricultural Inspector at Lihu‘e Airport.
He was preceded in death by brother Mitsuyuki Yano and son John Yano.
He is survived by wife Donna (Doi) Yano of Lihu‘e; daughters Jolene (John) Ogle of Lihu‘e and Alane (Bradley) Obidowski of Lincoln, Neb.; grandchildren John Makalea and Jana Ogle, and Jack and Jared Obidowski; sisters Chiyomi Waikida of Hilo, Betty Yano of Los Angeles, Calif., Ruth Nagata of Mountain View, Hawai‘i, Helen (Hatsuo “Joe”) Honma of Manoa and Nancy Yano of Honolulu; sister-in-law Toyo Yano of Los Angeles, Calif.; mother-in-law Yukiko Doi of Wailua; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel; services begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and the family requests flowers be omitted.
