Kaua‘i’s gymnasiums have been busy as of late as volleyball teams practice for the upcoming annual Kaua‘i Challenge Volleyball Invitational.
Now in its seventh year, the invitational, which starts this Thursday and runs through Saturday, Aug. 9, has grown from hosting eight teams for the inaugural competition to now 24. All of them are high school teams and come from across the state and from California. Many of the teams are ranked among the top 10 of their divisions in California and Hawai‘i.
Some of the tournament teams include El Toro High School from Lake Forest, Calif., St. Anthony School Seabury Hall on Maui, Sacred Hearts Academy and Moanalua High School from O‘ahu, Moloka‘i High School and all of the Kaua‘i high schools, including the newly established varsity team from Island School.
In the past, the Kaua‘i Challenge hosted teams from Oregon, Texas and Iowa.
The first set of matches begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, spread among Kaua‘i, Kapa‘a and Island School gyms. The division finals will be played at Kaua‘i High School.
