Advocates of beach safety awareness have come up with another tool designed to reduce the number of drownings on Kaua‘i.
Kaua‘i Fire Chief Robert Westerman came up with the idea to insert bookmarks with ocean safety tips in visitor guidebooks — a project that has been adopted and coordinated by the Kaua‘i Water Safety Task Force.
“It’s another way to get the word out, especially to visitors about the need to be careful when enjoying our beautiful beaches,” Westerman said.
Last month alone, three people drowned at different beaches around the island and one kayaker is still missing.
The task force is currently passing out the bookmarks — created by Wasabi Design Elements using an image by photographer Mike Coots — to interested parties.
Businesses interested in sponsoring future printing of the bookmarks featuring the company’s logo are asked to contact task force member Dr. Monty Downs at wmdowns2000@yahoo.com or Kalani Vierra at oceansafety@kauai.gov.
Downs said he’s approached the publishers of “The Ultimate Kaua‘i Guide” about including the bookmarks in their popular guidebooks before they’re shipped to retailers.
The Kaua‘i Water Safety Task Force is responsible for airport banners, full-page ads in the Kaua‘i Drive Guide, ocean safety brochures in airport racks and hotels, and safety presentations to hotel and activities’ desk personnel.
A daily ocean report with information on current ocean conditions and warnings is available at www.kauaiexplorer.com.
