KOLOA — Videocassettes for 10 cents, children’s books for 50 cents, hardback novels for a dollar.
“The shoppers were piled up outside the door around 6 p.m., Wednesday,” said David Thorp, librarian for the Koloa Library.
The Wednesday evening preview sale was for members of the Friends of Koloa Library which hosts the twice-a-year sale, Thorp said. The public was waiting when the doors opened at 9 a.m., yesterday (Thursday).
“There were about eight people waiting, and as soon as the doors opened, they started browsing and buying,” said a volunteer who wished not to be identified.
The volunteer said, among the crowd, there was a lady who spent almost two hours browsing which resulted in a box of books going out.
“People came from as far away as Kapa‘a and Wailua, and found some treasures,” she said. “One guy found a book on (Paul) Robeson for just 50 cents. It was a pretty good-sized book, too.”
That set up a topic of conversation among the Friends volunteers and Thorp as they traced Robeson to the “Ol’ Man River” tune from the “Showboat” soundtrack.
Brenda Robitaille of Lihu‘e was surprised to hear about the Friends’ preview night, but despite that, found an armful of books to add to her collection.
“I have a bagful from the Lihu‘e Library sale that I need to get to, but this is good stuff,” Robitaille said.
She came prepared as she packed her purchases into a canvas shopping bag.
Thorp said the March sale has less variety than the big sale in October, but was happy that people could still find items they wanted.
Gabriel Bagano, 4, was simply happy with his selection of a book on cars.
Some of the value items include a video special with 10 pieces for $1, CDs going for 75 cents each, books on CD selling for $1 each, paperbacks at 50 cents each and hardbacks at $1 each.
Children’s books are 50 cents each for hardbound books and two for 50 cents for paperbacks.
The sale continues from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Thorp said. “If you want to get in on the preview, join the Friends of Koloa Library for $5 a year. Otherwise, we’ll see you in October.”
Janet Rasmussen, a Friend of Koloa Library, was scheduled to take over one of the shifts, but had time to browse through the selections, finding titles that escaped her during the preview night.
“It’s always good fun,” she said.
Proceeds from the book sale support purchases of equipment and materials for the Koloa Library.
