KAPA‘A — There was no class Wednesday for Garden Angel martial arts students.
Rather, the kids took to opening bags of goodies and transferring them to plastic eggs at the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center.
“This is in preparation of the annual Aunty Aloha Easter Egg Hunt and Family Fun Day,” said Pete Gallardo, one of the leaders for the Garden Angels program.
Gallardo said this year’s event, scheduled for March 22 at the Kapa‘a Beach Park, should be bigger and better than previous years because of the support from the community.
To date, the Garden Angels has received sponsorship from Wal-Mart, Kmart and DK Towing. Additionally, Gallardo said Ken Carvalho of Fun n Kwazy Rides will have his assortment of rides available for keiki to enjoy.
The rides will join the Garden Angels’ offering of five bounce houses and five slides, and will highlight the family fun day.
In addition to the rides and keiki activity station, Gallardo said at least three musical groups have offered to provide entertainment during the event.
“The day actually starts at noon with Easter Egg hunts scheduled for 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.,” Gallardo said. “The students have taken the night off from class to fill plastic eggs so everyone can have fun.”
Volunteers are welcome to help the staff with set-up, breakdown and supervising keiki during the event.
Aunty Aloha Easter Egg Hunt and Family Fun Day is one of two fundraisers hosted by the Garden Angels. The second event is the Kaua‘i Open Martial Arts Championships, which is scheduled for later in the summer.
“Our program depends solely on the support of individuals and local community support,” Gallardo said.
The Garden Angels is a martial arts program designed to help the children and adults on Kaua‘i.
The goal of the Garden Angels program is to teach the fundamentals of self-defense, while also instilling discipline, teamwork, determination, devotion and respect for themselves and their fellow man.
Classes are free at the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center on Wednesday and Friday evenings starting at 6 p.m. For more information, call 635-7180.
