The Kaua‘i community is invited to a talk and reception at Kaua‘i Community College library at noon Monday for “Sailing with Lata: The Original Polynesian Voyager” — a presentation being given by Dr. Mimi George of the Vaka Taumako Project of the Pacific Traditions Society.
George will be emphasizing Nohoanga Te Matangi, the “wind compass,” a Polynesian navigation system. The exhibit is currently on display at the KCC Library.
Community, visitors and school groups are welcome. School groups are asked to call in advance. Admission is free.
In honor of the Kaua‘i Museum’s ‘Ohana Saturday, Meph Wyeth and George will discuss the elements of air and water through sailing, wind and weather control in their “The Vaka Taumako (A Canoe for Taumako) Project.”
The air and water theme is in keeping with the museum’s Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Man and Beast series.
The museum offers free admission the first Saturday of the month. Enjoy these special events, where one or all of the elements in this year’s theme are a basis for that day’s presentation.
The presentation on vaka will be Saturday from 11 a.m to 1 p.m.
