Positive changes at police department
As those who have closely followed Kaua‘i Police Commission meetings might recall, the North Shore Council, which comprises representatives of Kaua‘i’s North Shore community associations and homeowners associations has been concerned by limitations that were placed in 2006 on the public’s access to Kaua‘i Police Department public records, with the effects of that lack of transparency on the public’s confidence in the KPD, and with the wide gulf of distrust that exists between the KPD and many citizens.
Now we are pleased to report that we have been very impressed by the changes that have been instituted by the new leadership of our police department.
Police Chief Darryl Perry and recently appointed Hanalei District Commander Lt. Michael Contrades have been working to bring down the barriers between the KPD and the community. In our meetings with Chief Perry and Lt. Contrades, we have heard their messages of professionalism, accountability and enthusiasm. The new leadership’s efforts at community outreach, including the periodic use of foot patrols in which officers can meet and greet the public, has been met with enthusiasm.
We congratulate KPD’s leaders on their efforts to reduce the barriers that often seem to separate the police and the public. It is easy for citizens — and even for the police — to forget that KPD officers are members of our community who have made the extra commitment to serve for the betterment of our communities. The efforts of KPD’s leadership to reinvigorate openness and trust are very much appreciated here on the North Shore. We think the community should watch for positive changes from the department throughout the island.

Neither party getting it done
This is in response to a letter in the Forum titled “Obama a Republican pawn?”:
I have looked at the big picture as you say and here are my findings. I say “No Hillary.” Before you start yelling sexist remarks my way, let me say it has nothing to do with her being female. I actually think Condoleeza Rice should have run against Mrs. Clinton.
I give my reasons as follows:
• All politicians lie but Hillary has been caught way too many times telling some whoppers, like:
— She claims her mother named her after the famous climber Sir Edmund Hillary, when in fact she was born five years before he made his famous climb of Mt. Everest.
— She claims her daughter was also in peril on 9-11 when she was jogging in New York close to the towers and actually watched them fall and was only saved by ducking into a coffee shop. She said this on national TV in front of everyone. Four months later Chelsea said in an article she was on the other side of town and awakened by a friend who called her and she watched it all on TV.
— She claims she was duped by President Bush into voting for the use of force in Iraq, that she thought it meant that we would get tougher on diplomacy and not use force: The resolution uses the exact words “for the use of force.”
• And how fast we forget Whitewater and Travelgate.
• She claims Bush lied about WMDs. By the time the U.N. and Congress got off their butts I could have dismantled WMDs or sold them off and then turn around and say “Oh, you can come in and inspect now.”
The list goes on if you dig far enough. You say in your letter that Mrs. Clinton is “proven and tested” more so than Mr. Obama. Well, unfortunately they are both junior in the Senate. Neither has the experience in my mind to run the country. And as far as the Republicans spending money making sure Hillary doesn’t get elected: What do you think goes on everyday on both sides? They both spend money trying for the other guy not to get elected. And if you are a stay-at-home mom as you say, those days may be over if she wins. Say “hello” to more taxes and “goodbye” to tax relief.
I am so tired of the Democratic party hating the president and not helping him. They don’t have to agree with the man but give solutions and help solve problems instead of whining all the time.
I am not saying vote Republican, people. Vote your heart and remember the real issues that are important to you. I have voted both parties at given times. Yes, I was fooled as a lot of us were and voted for Mr. Clinton.
I will not vote for him to be the first husband.
All I hope is that our next leader will find a safe and logical way to bring our heros home safely and make sure that they won’t have to go back to the area again because we never got the job done all the way the first time.
I also would hope the next leader will secure our borders so authorized persons can be here and earn money, instead of illegals taking the money back out of the country. Neither party has gotten it done on these issues so far.
