James Regan “Rocky” O’Keefe
James Regan “Rocky” O’Keefe died Jan. 5, 2008.
He was a former San Diego lifeguard, longtime Hanalei surfer and resident from the early ’60s.
He is survived by his mother, Jane Strong; sister Mary Miller of Carrollton, Texas; brothers Kevin O’Keefe of Carlsbad, Calif., and Steven O’Keefe, of Kaua‘i; former wife Faith Janeski Price; and beloved nieces and nephews.
Those who knew him respected him not only as a waterman but also as a great friend. He will be missed.
A celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, at The Congregational Church of La Jolla, at 1216 Cave St., La Jolla, Calif.
Aurellano Alcantarra Agbulos
Aurellano Alcantarra Agbulos of Kekaha died at KVMH on Feb. 2, 2008, at the age of 98. He was born June 16, 1909, in the town of Santiago, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines.
Agbulos immigrated to Hawai‘i in 1927 and settled in Lawa‘i to work for the Koloa Sugar Plantation. He eventually relocated to Kekaha and worked with for the Kekaha Sugar Plantation. In 1955, he returned to the Philippines, met and married Consolita Bautista, brought her home to Kekaha and started their family. He retired from the Kekaha Sugar Plantation in 1974 as a cane unloader.
He was preceded in death by parents Saturnino and Gavina Alcantarra Agbulos, brother Cresencio and sisters Agrafina and Josefa.
He is survived by his loving wife, Consolita Bautista Agbulos; daughters Avelina Maruyama, Doris Agbulos and Nely (Danilo) Caberto, all of Kekaha; grandchildren Telissa Agbulos, Nekicia Maruyama and Keane Caberto; great-granddaughter Jordyn Maruyama-Chang Wo; sister Merced Pascua of Candon, Ilicos-sur, in the Philippines; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends can visit from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Kekaha. Services will commence at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
David ‘Jack’ Melamed
David ‘Jack’ Melamed died peacefully at home in Los Angeles. He was 96 years old. Beloved husband of Pearl Flaster Melamed, wife of 65 years. Also survived by sons Andrew Melamed, his wife Christine Melamed and grandchildren Mia, Dylan and Nage of Hanalei; Vincent Melamed of Nashville, Tenn.
His career in the motion picture industry spanned from 1933 to 1998. Melamed’s integrity, leadership, love of family and sense of humor will be missed by all.
Paul Donald Charles Lemke
Paul Donald Charles Lemke of Kapa‘a died Feb. 9, 2008, at his home in Kapa‘a at the age of 84. Born Aug. 19, 1923, in Honolulu, he was a chief electrician and World War II veteran. He also went to Kamehameha and Roosevelt, class of 1942.
He will be remembered for his letters championing Native Hawaiian and small landowner rights and the preservation of responsibility in government.
He is survived by his wife Marie Aguiar Lemke, of Kapa‘a; daughters Beatrice (Walter) Lemke Frieszell, of Honolulu, Kulamanu (Wayne) Medeiros, of Lihu‘e; sons Paul A. Lemke of Kapa‘a, William M. (Darrelyn) of Lihu‘e, Albert Lemke of Kapa‘a; brother William Lemke, of O‘ahu; sister Emily Williams of O‘ahu; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15 at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a . Services begin at noon. Cremation to follow the services. Casual attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Harriet Ahana Albao
Harriet Ahana Albao of Lihu‘e died Feb. 11, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 92. Born May 15, 1915, in Huleia, she was an editor for The Garden Island newspaper, headed the selective service and retired from the social security administration.
She was preceded in death by her husband Welcome Alba Albao and her son Alan Willey Albao.
She is survived by sons Timothy (Liberta) Albao and Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Albao; daughter Candace (Peter) Yanagihara; grandchildren Alane (Warren) Athara, Alan (Tina) Albao Jr., Alynda (Donavan) Travaso, Azlinn (Kyle) Gregg, Lilia (Douglas) Chong, Timothy (Kylene) Albao Jr., Ryan Yangihara, Jenel (Jason) Okamoto and Lichelle Albao; great-grandchildren Alia Aihara, Arin Aihara, Aukai Albao, Dallas Albao, Ikaika Albao, Travis Travaso, Taylor Travaso, Doughas, Cherie, Kaylie, Codie, Nikki, Rockie Chong and Jovie Okamoto; daughter-in-law Karin Albao; brother Ah Sau Ahana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 at Kapa‘a All Saints Church. Memorial services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. and inurnment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family requests that flowers be omitted. Casual attire is suggested.
