Hawai’i Democrats have 29 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August. The party will hold a presidential preference poll at its caucuses on Feb. 19 to determine how 20 of the delegates will be awarded. The candidates must get 15 percent of the vote to be eligible for delegates, which will be awarded proportionally based on poll results. Voters at the caucuses will also elect delegates to the state convention in May.
Caucus Voting
Party members who are registered voters are eligible. People can sign up and register on caucus night.
• Early registration: People are encouraged to register to vote and sign up for the party prior to the caucuses to help avoid long lines and delays on caucus night.
Information about voter registration is available at the state Office of Elections at hawaii.gov/elections/. Information about party membership and a list of caucus precinct sites are available at hawaiidemocrats.org. (A list of caucus precinct sites on Kauai can be found below.)
• Precinct registration 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19: Voters can register and join the party at their local precinct sites.
• Presidential preference poll, 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19: Voting will be open for a half-hour at a minimum and party leaders have promised to leave the voting open until everyone in line has cast ballots.
• Precinct caucus meetings, Feb. 19: People can attend the caucuses and run for precinct officer, district officer and delegate to the state convention. –
• Precinct vote count: Precinct officials will count the hand-marked paper ballots and report results to district officials.
• District vote count: District officials will compile precinct counts and send the results to party headquarters.
• Preliminary statewide vote count: Party leaders at headquarters at Ward Centre on O‘ahu will compile preliminary results for public release as they come in on caucus night.
• Official statewide count: Ballots will be recounted by party leaders, with representatives of the presidential campaigns present, on March 1 before the tally is declared final.
