Coleen Lawshe
Coleen Lawshe of Kalaheo died January 29, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 81. She was born on Aug. 10, 1926, in Cambridge, Mass.
Coleen met her husband, Jim, at a USO club in Boston where she was a hostess. Jim was a Navy officer attending radar school at MIT. Discovering that they both had a love for the beach initially sparked their romance. After marrying in 1946 in Boston, they ventured out and settled in the small town of Alamogordo, N.M., living in a converted chicken coop until post-war construction caught up with the growing community.
She enjoyed being involved in community activities and was very active in the Alamogordo Women’s Club, serving as club president for one year and as the executive secretary to the state president.
Coleen cherished her family, friends, and the hanai children that were brought into her life. Because of her outgoing personality, her home was always open to friends and drop-ins. Among those blessed by Coleen’s generosity were Seng Tanrattana, a foreign exchange student from Laos, Bill Bode, their next door neighbor, and several young officers from the nearby Air Force base. The many friendships she and Jim enjoyed created a well-organized “spy network” to help keep track of their five children.
After twenty years in New Mexico and a short time in northern California, the Lawshes settled on Kaua‘i in 1973, first in Weli-Weli, and then in Kalaheo. Coleen had seemingly unlimited energy when it came to involvement with her family, friends and the community. She was an avid bridge player making many friends at the P‘oalua Duplicate Bridge Club. She was active at St. Rafael’s and Holy Cross parishes, teaching catechism, and participating in the Altar Society.
Among her work experiences, she worked with her close friend Rita Troche in a condo-cleaning business. She also worked for Liberty House and was the manager of the Jewel Palace at the Waiohai before retiring. After retiring she tutored students in reading at Koloa School for four years.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Avis (Jewell) Fay; sister Barbara Taylor and her daughter Judy Freitas.
She is survived by her husband Jim Lawshe of Kalaheo; sons James (Cyndy) Lawshe of Arizona, Edwin (Valerie) Lawshe of Washington, Barry Lawshe of Colorado, and John Lawshe of Kalaheo; the Freitas family (Lenny, Brandon and Bryson) of Koloa; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held with rosary at 8:45 a.m., viewing at 9 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at Holy Cross in Kalaheo. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Aloha attire is suggested.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
