KAPA‘A — The Big Game gets the win before it even kicks off Sunday.
Because a lot of people will be involved as spectators for the football game in Arizona, the YMCA of Kaua‘i Inline Hockey League will not be playing on Sunday.
Instead, the league will host three games today as the Squirt division rolls onto the rink starting at 6:30 p.m.
That contest will be followed by the Bantam division contest at 7:30 p.m. when the Todd Mayer Green meets up with Chris Wingenberg’s squad.
A Midget division contest wraps up the evening starting at 8:30 p.m.
The Mayer Green team ended up handing the Devils a split in last weekend’s action as it handed the redshirts an 11-6 loss Sunday.
In the Squirt division, Sunday, the Sharks were 5-2 better than the Bruins.
Last Friday night’s games saw the Devils edge out the Bulls 8-6, and in the Midget division, Trevor McCracken netted a hat trick to lead the Blue to a 7-5 win over Green.
Cascade Mayer led Sunday’s Mayer Green victory with four goals and an assist. Kawai Peahu added a goal and four assists, Ben Steuri punched in a hat trick and Zack Lewis rounded out the win with 2 goals.
Jacob Lewis netted a hat trick in the second half to fuel the Devils’ comeback effort from a 6-1 halftime deficit, but the redshirts fell short as the Mayer Green kept pace with them for a 5-5 second half.
Earlier, Jacob netted 4 goals, Friday night, as the Devils got the better of a 4-4 halftime stalemate, outscoring the Devils, 4-2 in the second half.
Jean-Luc Tremblay paced the Devils’ win with five goals scored. Lyle Nemeth added the sixth goal and Corey Nemeth finished with two assists and Edward Punua had an assist in the effort.
Following Jacob’s lead Friday, Cydney Sitzler finished with 4 goals to round out the Devils’ win.
Daniel Alonzo, working out as a goalkeeper over the weekend series, finished with 36 saves on 42 shots Friday night for the Devils.
On Sunday, Alonzo donned the keeper gear, sans stick due to his age, as he demonstrated some fantastic keeper-saving techniques as he finished with 28 saves on 30 shots in the Sunday Squirt division game where he tended for the Sharks.
Alonzo finished the day in the box for the Mayer Green where he logged 36 saves on 42 shots.
The no-stick effort by Alonzo helped the Sharks who got 4 goals from Chanel Tremblay and one from Kaala Gandia. McKenna Lewis, playing defense for one half, finished with 2 assists in the win.
Edward Punua Jr. and Nina Antony scored for the Bruins, whose goalkeeper, Joshua Lakotas, finished with 22 saves on 27 shots.
Following McCracken in the Friday night Midget contest, Zeb Leech-Kritchman added two goals and Cydney Sitzler added one for the victorious Blue team who racked up 5 goals in the first half.
Bruce Perdue and Matthew Heller paced the Green team in the Midget division with two goals apiece followed by Kirsten McCracken adding one. Heller also finished with an assist.
