NAWILIWILI — Teen Counseling, Awareness, Rehabilitation and Education can continue to offer clean and sober support to youth recovering from substance abuse.
In a press release submitted by Hina Mauka, this is important support for students in recovery from substance abuse.
Clean and sober activities foster positive support from peers as well as other adults and the community, the release states. These activities also create a safe and positive environment for youth to interact with their peers.
Youth who are in recovery from substance abuse often have difficulty remembering how to have clean and sober fun.
Teen C.A.R.E. program offers youth in the program a chance to practice social skills at least twice a month.
Under the Hina Mauka umbrella, Teen C.A.R.E. substance abuse treatment program services youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years old, an often overlooked population, the release states.
The Teen C.A.R.E. program first opened it doors in 1999 at Kapa‘a High School, Kapa‘a Middle School and Waimea High School where the programs are headed by counselors Malia Tokioka, Brian Gray and Anthony Abalos.
Since then, Teen C.A.R.E. has opened the programs to the remainder of the public middle and high schools on the island.
Kaua‘i High School, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and Waimea Canyon Middle School opened their campus programs in 2005 headed by counselors Paige Honjo, John Sotelo and Marlene Schimmelfennig, respectively.
Vonn Ramos, clinical supervisor, heads the entire Teen C.A.R.E. corps of counselors.
Teen C.A.R.E. offers students in recovery, or those struggling to overcome their addictions, a safe and supportive environment to make positive changes in their lives.
This is done through a 16-week educational and process-oriented curriculum which covers a wide range of topics from stages of change and addiction to family dynamics and drug and alcohol education.
For more information on the program, or to help someone who is in need of Teen C.A.R.E. services, people can contact the Teen C.A.R.E. counselor at any of the participating middle and high schools.
