KILAUEA — The Gee’s Angels took advantage of its wings as it capitalized on Lihu‘e Kamakaze turnovers en route to a 41-19 win Thursday.
In an earlier contest, the Kaulupono Girls got 6 points apiece from Rea Plotado, Nicolei Banasihan and Cheyenne Duarte in its 25-8 win over Wailua in the county’s 13 and Under girls basketball league.
Angel guards Kristle Henry and Racquel Matayoshi sparked the defensive explosion that forced turnovers from the Kamakaze at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Mahea Hanie-Grace was the recipient of those turns, finishing the contest with a dozen points followed by Henry with 10 points along with Reggie McCabe who joined the action with 10 points, all dropping in the second half.
Angels low post Lauren Claypoole finished with 5 points and Matayoshi’s 4 points rounded out the win.
The Kamakaze got a strong fourth period, outscoring the Angels 8-3 behind 4 points each from Lauren Hinano and Bristy-Ann Agu.
Agu, the victim of heavy defensive pressure from the Angels, topped the Kamakaze scoring with 8 points followed by Kawehi Louis-Diamond who finished with 5 points, including a 3-pointer in the opening frame where the Kamakaze enjoyed its second lead, 5-3.
Hanano followed with 4 points and a pair from Lacey Lucas in the final frame rounded out the math.
With Vakeesha Lagazo nursing an injured finger on the bench, the Kaulupono Girls got the lead from Plotado and Duarte against Wailua.
Plotado opened the fireworks with a 3-point bomb and finished 3-4 from the free throw line for her night’s tally while Duarte, playing the point guard slot, nailed three field goals for her score. Banasihan nailed three buckets and was 0-1 from the charity stripe for her tally.
Pairs from Ashlyn Bueno and Krista Kali, tough in the paint, rounded out the victory.
Kekai Gonsalves, normally hot at the net, could not get the buckets to drop Thursday night and finished with 4 points to lead the Wailua effort.
Cortney Higa got a late-game trey to keep the crowd excited and a digit from Malani Lum rounded out the Wailua math.
