Hamilton now advances to the semifinals.
With just over five minutes left, Hamilton needed to score a 3.01 to beat Erica Hosseini and advance to the semis. After two waves, Hamilton had scored only 1.1 and 3.75. Hosseini was leading in their heat having caught three waves — scoring .5, 4.25 and 2.5.
Hosseini caught another wave scoring 2.75 to put her up by 2.15.
But Hamilton caught two more high-scoring waves at the last minute to pass Hosseini. She is the only Hawai‘i surfer left in the competition.
